Exim Bank Tanzania Board Chairman, Yogesh Manek participated in the ongoing ice bucket challenge being conducted in support of the fistula campaign in Tanzania.

 

Speaking shortly before taking on the challenge, Manek said he has been moved to accept the challenge in recognition of the number of lives that are lost and disabilities created by the disease.

“I wholly accept this challenge with great honour because I know that my participation will save lives and help in securing a fistula free Tanzania,” he said. 

 

According to available data, more than 8000 women die from fistula, 160,000 disabilities created and over 40,000 children below the age of one (1) year die from this curable disease.

 

“Exim Bank has been supporting various community development projects, especially in the health, environment and education sectors and we are happy to be part of this campaign as well,” he went on to say.

 

“And today, I take this Ice bucket challenge to show our commitment as a bank to continue supporting such initiatives,” the Board Chairman asserted.

 

He highlighted some of the initiatives Exim Bank has embarked on to include,  donation of mattresses to the Mwananyamala Hospital, construction of a lavatory facility for Kilakala Primary School (for girls) and actively participating in environment conservation exercises across the country.   

 

He was also keen to mention that all Exim Bank employees have been very supportive to the ice bucket challenge.

 

“We couldn’t be more thrilled with the level of compassion, generosity and sense of humour that employees are exhibiting as they take part in this impactful initiative,” he said.

 

He reiterated, that the challenge, is also aimed at encouraging employees’ and corporate figures’ engagement in corporate social responsibility activities.

Exim Bank Board Chairman Manek was nominated for the challenge by the Managing Director of Airtel Tanzania Sunil Colaso.

 

 He in turn nominated Ali Mafuruki, Chairman and CEO of Infotech Investment Group, Shabir Abji, Chairman of New Africa Hotel and Veena Jog, Managing Director of Advent Constructions Ltd to take part in the challenge.

2. Grand Canyon, the United States

The Colorado River carved out the Grand Canyon over hundreds of years, creating an amazingly complex canyon. The Grand Canyon is one of the Natural Wonders of the World and has also been named a UNESCO World Heritage site. It stretches over more than 1,200,000 acres in Arizona.

3. Kruger National Park, South Africa

One of the largest national parks in the world, Kruger covers millions of acres of land. It is host to an amazing number of African species, including elephants, giraffes and many other animals. They form a living carpet of color that attracts an even larger variety of butterflies. The park is certainly worth seeing in the spring, though it is lovely all year round. Another point of interest would be the park’s incredible plateaus, some of the highest in the world.
In 1993, the Park was established to protect the Himalayan Brown Bear along with its habitat. Though the Government of Pakistan has taken several effective measures during the last decade, the bear is still under great threat. There are also many great and unique animals and birds. The Deosai National Park is a tourist attraction and many tourists who visit Baltistan also go to Deosai.

5. Kakadu National Park, Australia

9. Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal

Nepal has a unique, wild look to it and Sagarmatha is no exception. The park contains a number of Sherpa villages, as well as a few monasteries. Here you will find Mount Everest, as well as its sister mountains, so the national park sees quite a bit of traffic. Several animals make their home here, including mountain goats that balance precariously along seemingly sheer rock cliffs.

The Iguazu National Park runs through Argentina and into Brazil. It protects the subtropical rainforest here, as well as the Iguazu Falls. Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos has joined Real Madrid for an undisclosed fee on a six-year deal.

Kroos, 24, was a key player in the Germany side which beat Argentina 1-0 to win the World Cup and scored two goals during the competition in Brazil.
He will be presented to the Real Madrid fans at the Bernabeu on Thursday afternoon after undergoing a medical.
Kroos joined Bayern from Hansa Rostock as a 16-year-old and has made 176 appearances for the German giants.
He spent 18 months on loan at Bayer Leverkusen but returned to win three Bundesliga titles and three German cups.
He was part of the historic treble-winning side of 2012-13 which also lifted the Champions League, before winning the Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup last season.
Kroos, whose contract with Bayern had one year left to run, had been linked with a move to Manchester United.

Kanye West and Iggy Azalea have been added to the Los Angeles lineup for the first Budweiser Made in America Festival set for Labor Day weekend, officials announced Wednesday.

The two rappers join headliners Kendrick Lamar, John Mayer, Cypress Hill and more at the summer music festival, making its West Coast debut Aug. 30-31 at downtown L.A.’s Grand Park. Azalea is slated to perform Aug. 30, while West is scheduled to perform Aug. 31 — the day after his performance at Made in America in Philadelphia, which runs concurrently with L.A.’s event.



Made in America comes to Los Angeles for the first time thanks to a collaboration between music mogul Shawn “Jay Z” Carter and the Los Angeles City Council. Jay Z and Mayor Eric Garcetti announced the bi-coastal event coming to L.A. in April.

Louis van Gaal: Will meet the Manchester United squad

The Dutchman begins his club career in England after steering the Netherlands to the semi-finals of the World Cup and will arrive at Carrington this afternoon.
He has already spoken about building a strong bond within the squad, with reports suggesting the players will be told to eat together every day after training.
United fans will be hoping for improvement after last season's disappointing Premier League finish and lack of major silverware, but Rene Meulensteen, a former Old Trafford coach, insists van Gaal will relish this challenge.

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has warned fans not to expect instant success from Louis van Gaal.

"I don't think it will faze Louis van Gaal at all in that respect, there are no worries there," he told Sky Sports News. "He will only thrive on it to some extent.
"But you really notice it when you're really getting into the routine, especially when you're going into pre-season and you see the massive popularity of the club and brand, that's what it is.
"To maintain that they have to get back up very, very quickly."
Van Gaal has acquired a fiery reputation during his hugely successful managerial career and Meulensteen believes the players must accept it or face a swift exit from the club.
"He's got his own management style, which has thrown up a few difficulties along the way wherever he's been, Barcelona or Bayern Munich because of the way that he is, the way he puts himself in front of players," he said.
"Players accept it or players sometimes don't. If they don't accept it, then yeah you probably have a problem."

Gary Neville thinks Louis van Gaal needs to sign more new players if Manchester United are to challenge for the title next season.

A seventh-place finish in the top tier underlined how far the club have slipped behind their main rivals and there is only a month before the opening home fixture against Swansea.
Meulensteen, who worked alongside Sir Alex Ferguson, admits van Gaal will need time to build the club back into one of the major forces in English football.
"They've had Sir Alex Ferguson and they've had a disastrous season with David Moyes, now another one comes in, so that will take time," he said.

Diego Costa: Joins Chelsea from Atletico Madrid

The deal had been in the pipeline for a number of months, and the clubs agreed a fee earlier in July, with the move now confirmed by the Premier League club.
The fee for the Brazil-born player, who represented Spain in the World Cup, has not been revealed but it is believed to be in the region of £32million.
"Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce Diego Costa has today completed his transfer from Atletico Madrid by signing a five-year contract," read a statement on the club’s official website.

"Everybody knows it is a big club in a very competitive league, and I am very excited to get started in England with a fantastic coach and team-mates."

In yet another controversial development on the constitutional review, leaders of the Coalition of People’s Constitution (Ukawa) have turned down a crucial appointment by Constituent Assembly (CA) Chairman Samuel Sitta of members to the Advisory Committee slated to meet next month in Dar es Salaam.

Ukawa’s statement comes just a day after Sitta in collaboration with his Vice Chairman Samia Suluhu appointed 30 members of the CA to participate in the Advisory Committee meeting which will be held on July 24 and 25.

Addressing journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Chadema’s Secretary General Dr Wilbroad Slaa said, the CA Chairman has no mandate to form the Advisory Committee because, according to him, Sitta has failed to manage the CA.

“How can the same leaders who failed to handle the last CA session be allowed to form and manage the Advisory Committee,” Dr Slaa queried.

He went on to claim that Sitta and his deputy, Suluhu have accepted a ‘different constitution draft’ to be tabled in the debating chambers and that they have also ignored views given by the Ukawa members.

“During the last session, Sitta allowed the tabling of a constitution draft which did not contain the people’s views to be discussed,” he claimed, saying it is this controversy that has led to the ongoing disagreements among the CA members.

Dr Slaa said the differences between the CA members is the result of poor management of the previous CA meeting, hence people have lost confidence in the performance of the CA.

“We have no quarrel with our fellow members, but we would like to insist that the only solution is to table the draft constitution that contains the people’s views and not the one under discussion now,” Dr Slaa demanded.

As far as he is concerned, the upcoming debate by the Advisory Committee will only be meaningful if it will be led by an independent leader and not Sitta, who he accused of biasness against opposition party members.

Dr Slaa went on to advise President Kikwete to intervene in the matter by either forming a new constitution commission or ordering the previous one to go back and seek people’s views one more time.

On his part, NCCR Mageuzi Chairman James Mbatia in an interview with a local television station said Ukawa’s decision not to return to the CA will “never change unless our demands are fulfilled.”

“Our walk out does not affect getting a new constitution,” he claimed “… but it is meant to ensure that our demands are considered,” he said.
Reached for comments, CA Chairman Samuel Sitta declined to speak.

According to a statement availed to the media on Monday, the CA Chairman Sitta in collaboration with his Vice Chairman Samia Suluhu appointed 30 members of the CA to participate in the Advisory Committee meeting to be held late this month.

The statement said the 30 member committee will among other things evaluate the work so far done by the CA and the work it expects to do when it resumes sessions next month.
It said the appointment has been done under Standing Order No 54 (4) and (5) of 2014.

The Constituent Assembly is expected to resume next month. It has so far worked on Chapters One and Six out of a total of 17.

An Egyptian truce initiative on Tuesday failed to halt rocket attacks on Israel by Hamas militants and other groups.

Israel, which had its first fatality on Tuesday, said senior Hamas militants had died in strikes on Gaza overnight.

Palestinian officials say at least 207 people have died in Israeli air raids, including 10 overnight into Wednesday.

Among those reported killed was a five-month-old baby.

An Israeli man was killed by a mortar shell fired from Gaza near the northern border with Israel.

Israel launched its Operation Protective Edge on 8 July. Its stated objective is to halt Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel, but the United Nations says the majority of those killed in Gaza have been civilians.

Twenty-four hours on from the first faltering attempts at a ceasefire, the conflict between Israel and Hamas grinds on to a grimly familiar pattern.

Israel says its warnings are to avoid civilian casualties in planned raids but they'll spread further fear, anger and uncertainty in Gaza where civilians will feel there are no real places of safety now.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu now faces a dilemma. There are right-wing members of his cabinet demanding a ground offensive and he doesn't want to look weak in domestic politics. But the risks for him are significant. Ground fighting may cause huge numbers of casualties, alienating Israel's allies, and trap him into a long campaign without a clear exit strategy.

Instinctively he seems to feel that Israelis would prefer to see Hamas diminished and the rocket fire ended through the air campaign. Ground fighting would mean Israeli casualties too.

But if air power doesn't prove decisive, the political pressure for him to go further will grow.
'No choice'

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) dropped leaflets and used recorded telephone messages to warn some 100,000 residents of Gaza to leave their homes before 08:00 (05:00 GMT) on Wednesday.

The warning came as militants continued to fire rockets at Israeli cities, the IDF said, adding that its Iron Dome missile shield had intercepted 10, including four launched at Tel Aviv.

The military said militants had fired more than 150 rockets into Israel on Tuesday, and more than 1,260 since Operation Protective Edge began.

The air force and navy had carried out strikes on 96 targets in Gaza on Tuesday, and more than 1,750 in the past eight days, it added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier announced he had "no choice" but to step up the military campaign, after militants failed to halt their rocket attacks despite the truce initiative.

The Egyptian-backed truce was to have started on Tuesday morning, after it was approved by Israel's security cabinet.

The ceasefire should have been followed by a series of meetings in Cairo with high-level delegations from the two sides.

Israeli attacks were halted for six hours, but resumed amid continuing rocket fire directed at Israel.


Hamas - which is designated a terrorist organisation by Israel and the US among others- said the terms of the ceasefire did not address concerns over the economic blockade of the Gaza strip, which has caused severe economic hardship for many Palestinians.

Senior Hamas spokesman Osama Hamdan told the BBC the group had only heard about the truce initiative through the media, and that a ceasefire could not be put in place without the details of any agreement being known.

The armed wing of Hamas, the Izz al-Din Qassam Brigades, dismissed the initiative, saying its battle with Israel would "increase in ferocity and intensity".

Mr Netanyahu has come under criticism in Israel for accepting the truce initiative. His office announced that deputy defence minister Danny Danon had been sacked for comments branding the PM a "failure".

Israel has mobilised tens of thousands of troops on the border with Gaza amid speculation a ground invasion could be launched.

The UN says at least 1,370 homes have been destroyed in Gaza and more than 18,000 people displaced in recent hostilities.

The International Red Cross warned that repeated bombing was devastating Gaza's "fragile water infrastructure", with hundreds of people left without water.
